A Week Minus Satellite Radio

by Rev. Iovine on January 14, 2010

Nearly everyone who knows me knows of my affinity for satellite radio. I’ve been a subscriber to Sirius and XM since 2002 and absolutely love the service. Their content is beyond anything that is available on radio anywhere. Of course, since 2002, many alternatives to Sirius XM have popped up, making it harder and harder to decide to continue to pay over $20 a month for this service.

Last night, someone I know suggested that I spend one week without satellite radio and see how it goes. Her contention was that with the vast amount of content available via my iPhone and the internet (much of it free and supported by ads), I could prove to myself that the monthly charge for satellite radio is outrageous. Considering that I was tired after our bible class last night, causing my defenses to be weakened, I said that I would try her little challenge.

At night, if I am not watching west coast sports on TV, I usually have Fox Sports Radio on XM blaring in my bedroom. At 10, it’s Tony Bruno, followed by J.T. the Brick at 1am (though, 9 out of 10 days I am asleep at this time, but waking up at 4 or 5, I turn on J.T., who is on until 6). Recently, Fox Sports Radio changed morning personalities, hiring Stephen A. Smith and replacing Steve Czaben. I like both. And as I get ready for the day, Fox Sports on XM is on the radio.

This morning, I thought that I would have great withdrawal pains from this routine. But … Fox Sports Radio is available on an iPhone application, and it’s free!! Not a bad start of the day, I’ll say.

Right now, I am writing in my church office listening to a classic rock station I am trying to customize on Slacker.com. And with the music in the background, I am not climbing the walls. Day One appears to moving along swimmingly, so far.

A couple of years ago, someone challenged me to stop consuming caffeine. That challenge went well for a few months until the alluring aroma of Starbucks came calling…This challenge could prove to a little more challenging. It should be interesting.

But I guess it will get me over my radio addiction to NHL Home Ice radio on XM.
